County gets helping hand

According to the county, refurbished men’s lockers at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium were made possible by the Hawaii Island Contractors Association – which donated labor – and HPM Building Supply – which donated supplies – in coordination with the University of Hawaii at Hilo athletic department.

Former Vul claims tourney

Former UH-Hilo golfer Corey Kozuma pocketed $1,800 in late August and a trip to Florida by winning his first Aloha PGA Assistant Championship at Hoakalei Country Club on his native Oahu.

After combining a 72 and a 75 for a one-shot win, Kozuma will represent the section at the 41st National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship, Nov. 9-12 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

“The course was setup great, despite some rain in the first round, but I played well in the morning and hung in there in the afternoon,” Kozuma, of Top Dawgs Golf Academy, said in a release.

• Also in August, Brad Bowen from the Kapalua Golf Academy captured the Aloha Section Senior PGA Professional Championship, edging defending champion Kevin Hayashi (75-74–149) of Hilo Municipal Golf Course by a stroke.

Hilo Little League fall-ball

As an extension to its summer baseball and softball season, Hilo Little League is conducting fall-ball starting Sept. 30 through the end of the year.

Coach applicants, as well as baseball and female softball players ages 8-14 are required to register by Friday.

Youth basketball clinic Saturday

Big Island Sports Academy will host a basketball clinic for boys and girls between grades 4-6 at Panaewa Park Gym from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 16.

The clinic is designed to provide basic concepts in all facets of basketball skill development, with an emphasis on the fundamentals and will be led by coach John Livsey – Big Island Sports Academy basketball coordinator – and current and former members of the UH-Hilo men’s and women’s basketball teams will be on hand to assist.

The registration fee of $30 covers a BISA T-shirt, lunch and awards.

Waiakea Uka baseball sign-ups ongoing

The Waiakea Uka Athletic Association has a few spots open in the Mustang division (born between Sept. 1, 2007 and Aug. 31, 2011).

Two Malinguis stipends are available

Applications are being accepted for the Larry Manliguis scholarship. A pair of $300 scholarships will be awarded, one to a Hilo High graduate, donated by the school’s class of 1960, and another given to a Big Isle graduate, funded by the Hawaii alumni tournament.

To be eligible, applicants must:

1. have a 2.5 GPA for their senior year;

2. write a one-page essay on how they intend to give back to their community;

3. plan to attend college

4. play a varsity sport.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 30
