When the biggest shopping season of the year begins next week, Hilo businesses hope to attract holiday shoppers on Small Business Saturday.

    The East Hawaii Cultural Center will launch the 24th Annual Trash Art Show with an opening reception and awards presentation on Friday, Oct. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded. The exhibit will be on display at the center at 141 Kalakaua St. in downtown Hilo through Oct. 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

    AHOWAN (Awakening Humanity to Oneness with All Nature) has traveled to 49 states in this last year presenting its Nature Oneness Weekend Experience.     The Food Basket has received a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation's Hawaii State Giving Council. The grant will support the Big Isle food bank's We Got Your Back program that addresses the 26.6 percent of children who are food insecure on the island of Hawaii.

    Miguel Montez has been cast in the title role of "The Toxic Avenger," the next production by Aloha Performing Arts Company. The plot revolves around nerdy Melvin Ferd III, who wants to clean up Tromaville, N.J., but gets dumped into a vat of toxic waste by the mayor's goons and emerges as a giant green mutant with superpowers.
