Police arrest 17 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI.

Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13, Puna, three and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 17 DUI arrests compared with 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.7 percent.

There have been 13 major accidents so far this year compared to 28 during the same period last year, a decrease of 53.6 percent.

There have not been any traffic fatalities so far this year compared with two at the same time in 2017.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
