4 to receive Hilo High Foundation awards

Clyde Nekoba, Dennis Miyashiro, Richard Okuna and Richard Onishi, the original officers of the Hilo High School Foundation, will receive the foundation’s Distinguished Service Awards during a recognition dinner Feb. 16 at Sangha Hall in Hilo.

The awards will be presented by foundation president Barry Taniguchi and vice president Allan Ikawa.

Nekoba, Hilo High class of ‘61, was a social worker and instrumental in launching winter baseball in Hawaii.

Miyashiro, class of ‘64, is an insurance agent and longtime community volunteer.

Okuna, class of ‘61, is a certified public accountant.

Onishi, class of ‘72, has worked for various companies and presently serves the community in the House of Representatives.

All four were involved in establishing and continuing the growth of the foundation.

Tickets are $50 and include a special dinner catered by Don’s Grill. Ticket buyers are encouraged to organize a mini-reunion with their class. Special tables for group sponsors are available: Platinum $1,500, Blue $1,000, Gold $750 and Viking $500.

“This would be a great time for alums to put together a table with classmates while helping Hilo High and the foundation,” said Newton Chu, the organizations secretary.

The nonprofit Hilo High Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the educational opportunities for students at Hilo High. For sponsors and to purchase tables, contact Art Taniguchi at 987-0287. For individual or small group ticket information, contact Chu at 961-0406.
